Sion wins sprint kart title

Woy Woy High School student Sion Bowker has won the Queensland State Junior National Heavy Sprint Kart title.

From the Wednesday until the Sunday evening of the Titles, Sion was constantly either practicing, racing or making adjustments to his equipment.

Most days started at 5am and continued until well after dark.

On Friday in a series of time trials to determine grid position in the heats, Sion qualified third.

In the first two heats, he twice came second, by 0.008 and 0.15 seconds respectively.

In the pre-final, Sion started second and finished in the same position giving him a front row start from second position in the final.

The final was a 15-lap race which called for almost 15 minutes of intense concentration as well as physical exertion similar to that of a 1500 metre swimmer.

The lead changed a number of times during the first few laps but, in lap 14, Sion took over the lead which he retained until the end to win by a margin of 0.07 seconds.

Sion add the title of Queensland State Champion for Junior National Heavy Sprint Karts to his second place at the Victorian Open Titles and fourth place at the National Titles earlier this year.
