Concert over youth suicide

Brisbane Water Secondary College Woy Woy campus will be the venue for a concert to promote youth suicide awareness.

The concert will be held on Friday, March 14, from 6pm until 10.30 pm and will cost $7 a head.

Five young bands from the Central Coast and Newcastle area will be featured.

The bands are Rubidium, Rubics Cuba, Slight of Hand, Bunsen and the night is being headlined by Woy Woy's own band, Fyna.

The members of Fyna are Tim Johns (bass), Dave Jenkins (drums), Alex Benison (vocals and guitar).

Fyna drummer David Jenkins said: "The recent instance of a teen suicide on the Peninsula has brought home to our youth what death really means and how it affects so many people.

"Youth suicide affects everyone.

"Being teenagers ourselves we can relate to the way suicidal teens are feeling and the problems facing them.

"A lot of kids think that suicide is the only way out, and we just think it is such a huge waste of a young life.

"After the recent suicide of a friend, we have come to realise the effects youth suicide has on a community and the awareness raised from such a sudden and great loss.

"Death and suicidal death is a really sad thing, especially when people are taken from us at a young age.

"It affects everyone and there is no way you can ever put the feelings and emotions brought on by the death of a friend or loved one into words.

"Newcastle, the Central Coast and Wollongong have the highest rate of suicide in Australia, and the third highest in the world," David said
