Camera is in but not on, says RTA

The speed camera outside Woy Woy Public School is in place but not operational a Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) official said last Wednesday, March 5

The camera would be switched on shortly, according to the official who did not wish to be named.

"An announcement will be made prior to the camera becoming operational," the person said.

"Messages and roadside signs will also make motorists aware that it is functioning."

The camera was installed as part of NSW 40km/h school zone speed camera trial which has seen 10 school zones across NSW fitted with speed cameras including both Woy Woy Public School and Woy Woy South Public School.

The RTA official denied that two cameras in the Peninsula area was excessive saying the there were criteria for selecting the sites.

Traffic volumes of around 20,000 vehicles per day, the level of pedestrian use and accident history were contributing factors, the person said.

The trial was expected to take at least six months followed by an evaluation of their effectiveness.

During the trial the RTA would conduct speed surveys to assess the effectiveness in slowing vehicles, designated speed limits and reducing accidents.
