Williamson play to be performed

"After the Ball" a play by David Williamson is to be performed by Woy Woy Little Theatre group at the Peninsula theatre from March 14 to 30.

The play is a frank, critical look at Australian suburban life from the 1960s to the 1990s, according to director Mrs Fran Kendall.

"It traces the aspirations, the disappointments and the realities that test family life at a time when social change has never been more bewildering.

"It makes a plea for reconciliation."

The play tells the story of Stephen (Marc Calwell) and Judy (Cath Stone), brother and sister, whose lifestyles and outlooks could not be further apart.

When they are reunited at the bedside of their dying mother, family memories painfully and mercilessly return.

Fran Kendall said that David Williamson's play was very down to earth.

"I'm in my early 60s and the main characters speak just as my parents did," she said.

Mrs Kendall said that older Australians would also appreciate historical value of the play tracing events over the past 50 years such as the introduction of decimal currency and the Whitlam years.

"Although it's realistic dialogue, it's also very funny."

"We get really good audiences at the Peninsula Theatre and get a good response from them," she said.

She said she hoped people would come and see the cast of nine in the intimate atmosphere of the theatre.

The play opens Friday, March 14, at 8pm and runs Saturdays 8pm and Sundays 2pm until March 30.

Tickets are $16 adult, concession $12 and child $5.

Bookings can be made at the Olympic General Store, Blackwall Rd, Woy Woy, or by phone on 4341 4067.
