Obituary: A passion for golf and cars

Eddie Stokes passed away at his home on January 3 after a long and brave battle with mesothelioma.

He leaves wife Maree and three sons Lee, Mark and Chris.

His funeral took place at Palmdale on Tuesday, January 7, and his popularity was evident by the large number of people who attended.

In recent years, Eddie realised it was a race against time but he loved his golf and, throughout his long period of ill health, continued to play as long as he could stand.

He was a well-known golfing member at Everglades Country Club and a member of the Whingers Social Golf Club, aptly named for some but certainly not Eddie.

One of his favourite pastimes was to put the clubs in the car and head off for a couple of days with some of his mates for a game of golf.

Another passion in Ed's life was cars: if he was not fixing one, he was buying one.

His mechanical expertise was given eagerly to anyone who needed it, especially if it involved an electric golf buggy or cart.

Eddie and Maree came to Woy Woy in 1991 from Sydney and Eddie was a driver for Peninsula Bus Lines from that time until his retirement due to poor health in 1996.

It was a job he really enjoyed because it gave him the opportunity to meet people, joke and have a chat.

Ed and Maree have always been involved with Everglades both through golf and socially and, in Maree's case, a very active member of the Women's Golf Committee.

He will be sadly missed by the golfing fraternity, both men and women.

His fellow members at Everglades and his many friends have extended deepest sympathy to Eddie's family.
