Umina juniors make cricket finals

The final leg of the cricket season has seen the Umina Juniors put in some more strong performances, with three teams reaching the semi finals and two into the finals.

Round 8 once again saw strong batting performances from Mitchell Fiddock (16B) with 67 not out and Daniel Friend (11A) 42 not out, as well as a dynamic 51 from Andrew Trinder (14B).

However, the undoubted highlight of this round was some incredible results with the ball.

Michael Payne (13B) had the remarkable figures of 7/12, Matt Mitchell had 4/31 and Jeff Tomlin (16B) had the figures of 4/11 with a match winning hat trick.

Round 9 brought more solid knocks with the bat.

Ben Howell (15B) had scores of 66 and 14 (both not out), Harry Jones (14B) had 27 and 63 not out, and Daniel Friend 40 not out and 23.

With the ball, stars were Chris Lloyd (13B) a devastating 5/7, Adam Smith (14B) 3/6, Josh Wakeham (11B) 3/13 and Daniel Bryant (11A) 2/5.

Round 10 had batting highlights from Ben Brooks (11B) 40 not out, a stylish 44 from Matthew Jones (11A), a solid 47 from Ryan Matthews (16B) and 53 well deserved runs to Myles Burgess (15B).

In the bowling department, great performances came from Ben Kalnins (U16B) with 2/3, Tim Bell (15B) 3/8 and a fantastic all round effort from Myles Burgess with incredible bowling figures of 4/2.

While several teams managed to place themselves in semi-final contention, rain frustrated potential candidates.

However, three teams made it through, 16B, 14B and 12C, with the 14s and 12s proceeding to the finals.

Although neither team brought a premiership home, the ratio of three semi-final berths from a nine-competition club side was still a satisfying for the club.

Four Umina junior cricketers were recipients of the Gosford Wyong District Cricket Association performance awards in their age group.

All the boys were bowlers returning a top wicket haul for the district competitions.

The recipients were 16B Daniel Fiddock 23 wickets, 15B Myles Burgess 26 wickets, 14B Andrew Smith 21 wickets and 13B Chris Lloyd19 wickets.

The boys were presented with their trophies at Mingara on May 1.

The club’s planned End of Season Presentation was washed out in the recent torrential rain.

Even though an indoor venue had been arranged, the volume of rain on the day flooded the access areas to the hall, making the presentation impossible.

With Mother’s Day on the agenda, the club has had to reschedule the presentation to Sunday, May 20.

The venue and times are the same, and it will go ahead rain hail or shine.

Players with queries have been asked to contact their coach-manager.
