In recognition of the Centenary of Federation, Peninsula News has taken the opportunity to look back on the past 100 years on the Peninsula. Each month journalist Amanda Jackson selects some of our local history, recorded by local newspapers over the century.
Member for Peats, Tony Doyle, tabled a petition in State Parliament to protect Brisbane Water from ShellFish raiders. It had hundreds of signatures.
Talk of Woy Woy forming its own council caused a stir on the Peninsula.
It was said by Liberal candidate for Peats, Keith Lavers, that Woy Woy ratepayers would pay double their rates if Woy Woy formed its own council.
"People who say Woy Woy people would be better off with their own council are forgetting the area's flooding problems and the way the funding is shared by ratepayers throughout the city," said Mr Lavers.
"Ill fight tooth and nail to prevent the establishment of a Woy Woy Council."
