Shave day at Empire Bay
Empire Bay Public School will hold a "Shave for a Cure Day" in support of the Leukaemia Foundation on Monday, May 28.
A special assembly will be held at noon in the hall where some staff and community members will have their heads shaved for the charity.
The school has asked each child to donate a gold coin as an incentive for the "shavees" to lose their hair.
Shauna McNeil from "Waves By Shauna" hairdressers at Ettalong will shave the hair.
Students will not have to wear school uniform for the day and they have been asked to wear a "crazy hairstyle" with wigs, coloured hair, crazy hats or beanies or to wear a bathing cap to simulate a shaved head.
The school has also asked families to make a pledge to donate money to the Leukaemia Foundation.
The foundation told the school that leukaemia was cancer of the bone marrow and comprises 15 per cent of all cancers.
Within the next five years, 30,000 Australians would be diagnosed with leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma or a related blood disorder.
Often, within 24 hours of being diagnosed with leukaemia, patients had to travel to a treatment centre in a major city, where treatment could last months or even years.
Funds raised by the Leukaemia Foundation would go towards medical research seeking a cure for the disease, financial aid for patients, bone marrow registers and educational and emotional support for leukaemia patients and their families.
