Umina CWA turns 50

The Umina Beach branch of the Country Women's Association celebrated its 50th birthday on Monday, April 30.

The new building was officially opened by group president, Mrs l Kelman, on the branch's 11th birthday, April 12, 1962. It was completely free of debt.

One of the first events was a baby show.

The branch's current membership is 67.

Activities are similar to those of days gone by with cultural and international days, knitting for needy causes including Gosford Hospital and Westmead Childrens' Oncology Department.

The branch members sew faceless dolls for hospitals and bears for the ambulance service.

They give donations to Meals on Wheels, The Salvation Army, Child Flight, Woy Woy Nursing Home. YOTS, the Royal Volunteer Coastal Patrol and the Flying Doctor.as well as scholarships,through head office.

The branch enters the annual handicraft and cooking competitions.

It enters the David Jones Award for the best average attendance at monthly meetings and has figured in winning or coming second or third quite a number of times..
