Retirement hobby flourishes
In 1990, Jeff Davis opened his appliance service business in Woy Woy as a hobby for his retirement.
Little did he imagine that by the time he died earlier this year, the business would grow to operate from three sites, have two service vehicles and employ many members of his family.
Jayars Appliance Service started at 115 Blackwall Rd with the support of Electrolux and Hoover.
In 1992, Jeff's youngest son, Mark, joined his father and, in 1993, his eldest son, Kevin, also joined the family team.
It soon became obvious that the single shop that housed the business was too small and additional shops were taken over to accommodate the demand for space, still remaining at 115 Blackwall Rd, but taking over more of the shops in the complex on the Victoria Rd corner.
Jeff officially retired in 1995, but remained involved one day a week until he passed away recently.
Jeff's brother, Barry, joined the team in 1996 and, at the request of Hoover, in 1997, they opened another store in Normanhurst servicing the northern suburbs of Sydney as well.
The support received from the local community meant that the business continued to grow and, in 1999, it moved to larger premises in Mutu St, Woy Woy.
Kevin's wife Ruth and son Warwick are now also employed in the business.
Today, Jayars has two fully equipped road service vehicles and sells new and reconditioned vacuum cleaners, reconditioned fridges, dryers and washing machines as well as having a supply of discounted vacuum cleaner bags and spare parts.
