Cub's whisper grows to roar
It started as a whisper this roar, but in a few short months it was a roar that was to be heard all over the Central Coast.
The roar belonged to the Woy Woy Rugby under-11s Lion Cubs.
A team of boys and girls with a multi-ethnic background, all with a single desire to play rugby, and play rugby they did.
From a ragtag mob who had trouble catching a football let alone passing one, they would become the team.
With quiet encouragement from parents, wise words from Louie the coach, they were soon to show the opposition how to play this game they play in heaven - Rugby Union.
Many a cold morning was spent on football ovals from Woy Woy to Ourimbah.
We watched as the team confidence grew and skills were developed.
With a war cry of "hamburger", they took on the opposition with the rugged forwards showing the way.
The backs were then able to show off their talents. With speed to burn, tries were plentiful.
So too were the victories.
This year was the inaugural year for the team.
The aim was to play football and have some fun.
Fun was something enjoyed by players, parents, spectators and our biggest kid, coach Chris Lewis.
A bonus was our grand final appearance and victory in that game saw us undefeated premiers.
The sportsmanship displayed by the team both on and off the field was first class, gaining respect from many while bringing credit to Woy Woy Rugby Club.
The committee, players and coaching staff made all us first-year parents feel welcome.
The next rugby season is a fair way off yet, but the club is hoping to field a number of junior teams.
