Historic carriage may be scrapped

Woy Woy Public School may have to scrap its historic train carriage because it cannot afford repairs.

"To repair the significant timber damage and undertake a complete cut-back and re-painting would cost a significant sum," school principal Mr Warwick Hannon said..

"The difficulty we have is that the carriage is not covered by Department of Education and Training funding."

"Paint is peeling and wood rot is evident in many areas," he said.

"In its present state, the carriage is headed towards an occupational, health and safety risk and will soon be a danger for students and the community."

Mr Hannon said the choices left were to repair or remove the carriage.

"No decision has yet been made on this," he said.

The carriage dates back to the 1800s.
