Surf clubs could be rebuilt - Bockholt

One or both surf clubs on the Peninsula could be demolished and rebuilt, depending on the recommendations of a report to Gosford Council, according to Cr Lynne Bockholt.

The report would come to Council shortly recommending that the surf clubs be inspected with a view to finding out the exact condition of each club, she said.

"The report will be the basis for Council setting priorities for replacement and renovation."

The report would give Council the opportunity to obtain full details of the problems faced by the clubs in trying to keep their buildings operational.

"Council strongly supports the Surf Lifesaving movement on the coast believing the volunteers do a magnificent job patrolling our beaches and keeping us all safe," said Cr Bockholt.

"It must be remembered that these people give up their free time to assist others and there’s not an awful lot of that these days.

"I believe the surf clubs are a wonderful community asset, particularly for young people, a place where they can learn about caring for the community without payment or reward.

"I am always struck by the tremendous sense of camaraderie between life savers of all ages and this carries through from the over-60s to the youngest Nippers."
