Students helped to decide

Students from Umina High School have been given assistance in deciding whether to return to complete senior study, move to alternate education or enter the workforce.

They have attended a three-day program which included a motivational speaker, Ormondo Hurley, a musician and actor from Sydney.

He aimed to inspire students to overcome barriers that may prevent them fulfilling their goals personally, vocationally and academically.

Workshops covered ideas and strategies for surviving senior school through positive thinking, time management, goal-setting and career planning.

Students considering tertiary education toured Sydney University and were addressed by Dr. Karl Kruszelnicki.

Other students visited Central Coast workplaces, local employment agencies, youth support facilities and group training companies, and were involved in a one-day training program that provided them with a "Work Entry Skills" certificate.

The Umina High program was supported by the Full Service Schools Program, a federally-funded program designed to provide additional support to schools to develop initiatives and alternative programs for students at risk of not completing Year 12.
