Woy Woy represented in State judo
Four members of Woy Woy Judo Club have been accepted for the State squad.
They were Drew Evans in the Young Men's Division, and Daniel Simmons, Ben Boyd and Sean Cole at the Under-16 level.
This selection involves the boys travelling to Canley Vale every Saturday for six weeks to train with the NSW Coach in addition to their regular Tuesday and Thursday night training with fully accredited coach Danny Simmons.
Newcastle under-16s Jessica Malone and Steven Arnold, who train with Woy Woy twice a week, were also selected for the State squad.
Club secretary Lindy Simmons described the selections as "a true judo commitment".
"Since closure of our judo rooms 14 months ago by Council, the children have been training under great difficulty in a modified squash court," she said.
"This recognition of the ability and determination of our players at a national level is a great reward for all club members.
"Currently we have no update on Council's plans for a new Community Centre, but we are still hopeful a new facility for the judo club and all centre users will be a reality before the end of the year 2000."
Being a non-profit organisation, Woy Woy Judo Club is unable to assist any of their members with the cost of transport, accommodation and other expenses associated with participating in the National Titles.
However, Lindy had confidence in the generosity of Peninsula residents.
"Travelling to Canberra and staying away from their homes will be a considerable cost for those selected.
"If anyone wishes to sponsor a player or make a donation to assist it would be greatly appreciated."
