Volunteers congratulated
Woy Woy Bowls chairman, Mr John Gardner, has congratulated club members who volunteered for the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
"Heartiest congratulations to all Australian medal winners and to our club members who were to the fore with that amazing volunteer force," he said.
In the Woy Woy Bowling Club newsletter, News without Bias, Mr Gardner also explained why bowls was a sport in the Commonwealth Games, but not the Olympics.
"It's all a matter of numbers," he said.
"Lawn bowls is not included in the Olympics because we don't have 65 countries playing it world-wide.
"At present we number only 35, so we fall well short.
"Bowls has been a part of the Commonwealth Games since its inception, but getting a start at the Olympics has proven futile despite our efforts."
He also explained that despite the sport's national profile, bowls, like netball, was relatively unknown in some regions of the world.
