Mural features dolphin seascape

A mural featuring a seascape with dolphins appeared on two Cityrail structures near the Rawson Rd crossing, just south of Woy Woy station, over the weekend of November 8 and 9.

While Cityrail passengers were being bussed between stations due to track work, Ettalong artist and rail worker Tony Garland was beautifying the rail facilities with a maritime theme.

Tony was commissioned by the Rail Infrastructure Corporation (RIC) to paint murals on graffiti-prone structures in the network

He said his mural was part of a trial by RIC and Gosford Council to deter graffiti and that so far it had worked.

"I've painted murals at Woy Woy high school and Woy Woy Primary School and they've pretty much been left untouched."

Vandals had tagged the structures where Tony painted his dolphins in the past.

"People appreciate good artwork and don't tag it," Tony said.

If Tony's work proves successful there are plans to put murals both near Koolewong station and south of Woy Woy station.

"They're my next targets," Tony said.

Tony also has plans to promote aerosol art in the local area, with competitions and teaching young people about respect for property and developing their artistic skills.

"I want to engender the thought that there is a right way and a wrong way."
