Warning about repair men

Member for Peats, Ms Marie Andrews, is supporting the Department of Fair Trading in warning Peninsula residents to beware of "con men" offering painting and repair work.

Ms Andrews said residents should be cautious in their dealings with unlicensed trades people who went from door to door offering to paint roofs or carry out other maintenance work.

There had been a number of cases recently reported where people offering to carry out painting and or repair work were nothing more than "con men", she said.

She said the Department of Fair Trading had advised that a simple contract was compulsory for work over $200 in labour content.

The Department of Fair Trading advised residents to deal with a local licensed trades person, she said.

"In that way, if the work is not up to scratch you know the trades person will still be around to fix the problems.

"Next time an unlicensed trades person comes knocking on your door offering to carry out work on your home, be polite but firm and decline their offer," said Ms Andrews.

"If you are unsure at anytime about a person’s trade credentials, then do not hesitate to contact the Gosford Office of the Department of Fair Trading on 4324 6300."
