Dune care group launched

Gosford mayor Cr Chris Holstein has launched the Peninsula Dunecare Group.

Mr Craig Arms from the council’s natural resources section and Ms Robyn Urquhart, council’s bushcare officer, also attended the barbecue breakfast on March 31.

The group's voluntary coordinator Mr Tony Whitehead said Dunecare’s primary objective was to limit disturbance to the dunes and to regenerate native vegetation, with the support and guidance of the council’s Bushcare program.

Volunteers joining the group would gain an insight into the local ecology and would contribute to efficient natural resource management, hopefully resulting in social and economic benefits, he said.

The group would also record local environment information to be used in formulating reserve management plans.

Mr Whitehead said an important aim of the Peninsula Dunecare Group was to generate community environmental awareness within the area.

The group was also seeking to erect a quality structured, interpretive information sign similar to those at National Parks.

The purpose of such a sign would be to inform the community on the group’s activities, local ecology and most importantly to seek long term community support, he said.

For further information, contact Tony Whitehead on 4342 7849.
