Radio station at PCYC

Members from the Central Coast Amateur Radio Club based at Kariong have volunteered to set up a radio station at the Umina PCYC.

Members of the club use amateur and citizens band equipment.

All members are electronics enthusiasts who enjoy radio communications with other people around Australia and the world.

Members' ages vary from teenagers through to the elderly.

Some are CBers and others are amateur radio operators.

The station operates every Thursday night from 5.30pm to about 7.45pm.

It is intended that the hours will be extended as the facility gains popularity.

Those who would like to join do not have to know about radio or communications.

Team leader Mr Brian Belcher said it was not an expensive hobby or complicated like computers.

He said it was very simple, could be easily understood and was quite rewarding personally.

Mr Belcher said: "It gives people the opportunity to get the hands on feeling."

"Come along, see an exciting and interesting hobby in operation.

"You can talk on the radio with other people around the country or around the world.

"The volunteers will be only too happy to show you how."

The station would be open to all people, regardless of age.
