Environment program seeks schools

Gosford City Council is again inviting local schools to participate in its Schools Environment Awareness Program.

Theme for this year's program is "Use your Brain, not the Drain".

Gosford City Council general manager Mr Peter Wilson said the program was now in its 12th year.

"We're inviting all primary schools in the city to take part in this year's program which will highlight the need to protect our local waterways," said Mr Wilson.

"Staff from Council's environment section are visiting schools to promote the program and encourage school children to help protect our local beaches, lagoons and other catchments.

"Importantly, we want to highlight the need to keep stormwater drains free of rubbish. We want children to understand how their local waterways are closely linked to, and affected by, stormwater drains.

"During the year, participating schools get involved in a range of projects based around the environmental theme. These projects could include designing posters, or producing dance or drama presentations.

"Our Schools Environment Awareness Program has always been popular with primary schools and it culminates with a special presentation day at Laycock Street Theatre later in the year," said Mr Wilson.

Any primary school wanting more information should contact Council's Schools Environmental Awareness Program Coordinator, Maree Whelan, on 4325 8144.
