BMX rider on the verge
Woy Woy's Danny Serret, 10, is poised to join the Australian team to race in New Zealand after only 14 months of BMX racing.
Danny's father Gino had made a bike for him in late 1998 and shortly after Danny joined the BMX Club at Terrigal.
Proud mother, Heather, said her son has a great passion for the sport.
"When we first visited the club, he was so excited he thought all his Christmases had come at once, just knowing he would be able to race BMX," she said.
"In the first year of racing, club official Narelle Walker encouraged Danny to try out in the region Zones."
Danny took her advice and finished with his first winner's trophy.
"After his first trophy, he wanted to go all the way and give his best to the sport. He loved it so much," Ms Serret said.
Ms Serret said that, although Danny went on to the State titles and won his first race, he didn't succeed in the others in his first year.
"He didn't get that state plate but he walked away happy knowing he got to race in the State titles," she said.
Danny has since progressed to the stage where he is on the verge of being selected for an Australian team, his mother said.
Danny said he really enjoyed the sport and had made some good friends.
"I competed in the five region zones and went to Taree, Lake Macquarie, Maitland and Port Stevens," Danny said.
He is currently looking for a sponsor.
