College wins bushland grant
Brisbane Waters Secondary College has won a grant for $2700 from the Department of Environment and Conservation to help look after the remnant bushland along its creek.
The small patch of bush land is part of the Umina Coastal Sandplain Woodland endangered ecological community. The woodland is listed on the State's threatened species schedule.
There are only four patches of the bushland left on the Peninsula due to urban development.
Unfortunately, the four small pockets of vegetation are fighting weed invasion.
The grant will cover employing contract bush regenerators to do a primary assault on the weeds over the next few months.
The college is hoping to form a voluntary bush care group to tidy up any remaining weeds and to maintain the site by meeting on a regular basis.
The bush care group will be open to parents and friends of the school as well as interested community members, especially those who are neighbouring the school.
The college said it would be an informal and friendly gathering with training and tools provided.
They hope to make it a social occasion with morning tea and a chance to catch up with others.
