Widows' anniversary recognised
The jubilee anniversary of the Ettalong War Widows Guild has been commemorated in State Parliament.
In a recent speech, Member for Peats Ms Marie Andrews paid tribute to past and present office - bearers of the Guild, which was founded in 1954.
The first in a series of events laid down to commemorate the Guild was held on Anzac Day when a special plaque was dedicated in recognition of the 50 years' service by the Ettalong War Widows Guild to the local community.
On that occasion, Guild president Mrs Joyce Davis delivered a speech, extracts from which the local Member drew upon to assist with her speech in Parliament.
Ms Andrews told Parliament that the oldest member of the Ettalong Guild was Mrs Alice Fitzpatrick, 104, who still regularly attended meetings with her daughter Mrs Gloria Peachey..
Ms Andrews commended the Ettalong War Widows Guild Club for carrying out the creed of founder, Mrs Jessie Vasey to the fullest extent.
That creed is to provide friendship and support to war widows and promote the special standing, which that group has within the local community.
In addition to the Anzac Day dedication, a well-attended commemorative service was held at St Luke's Anglican Church, Woy Woy, on May 4 and a 50th Anniversary luncheon was held on Monday, May 31, at the Ettalong Beach War Memorial Club.
