Lions battle on in rugby union

Woy Woy Rugby Union club is still going strong after an interesting two weeks of results.

The first grade team suffered a defeat on the stroke of fulltime against Ourimbah to be beaten 14-11.

Being down 11-3, the Lions fought back to draw level 11-11 early in the second half only to see a penalty against them for alleged offside on the stroke of fulltime.

"The team tried all day to break Ourimbah's defence.

"However, in the end, the best the Lions could get was a bonus point," said coach Ross Hopkins.

"Best for the Lions was 'Big Paul' Gooley with a barnstorming game.

"Steve Lauti was everywhere and led the team from the front and captain Peter Wright never stopped trying all day."

In the next round against Kariong, the firsts had a solid win against their "hoodoo" team.

An early try by Kariong had them 7-0 in front, with the Lions drawing level to square things up at 7-all at half time.

The game plan was adhered to superbly in the second half for the Lions to run away with the game to win 35-7.

"After seven rounds, the Lions sit in fifth spot only four points off second."

The second grade suffered their second loss in succession in a nail-biter going down 17-10.

"In a most entertaining match, the Lions had their chances but a try on the stroke of fulltime cruelled their chances," Mr Hopkins said.

"Best for the seconds was Grant Fennelly, Danny May and Chris Timmis."

The second grade won well against Kariong 42-0 in a spirited match.

"Best for the Lions were Grant Fenelly, Chris Timmis, and Moses Tamani with three tries.

The third grade team tasted its first defeat of the season against the second placed Ourimbah 35-14.

"In a fiery encounter, both sides traded blows and it was a late comeback from the Lions in the second half that got the home side working towards a win," Ross Hopkins said.

"Unfortunately, Ourimbah had a big enough lead to eventually win the game.

"Best for Woy Woy were Isaac Buatava, Steve Hopley and Darren May."

The Lions are taking a side to Bangkok for their International 7's tournament in October.

Interested parties should contact Ross Hopkins on 0417 828346 for details.

Next game for the Lions is on June 5 against Avoca at Woy Woy Oval.

First grade kicks off at 6pm.
