Catholic teachers strike

Catholic school teachers at St. John the Baptist, Woy Woy, were among Catholic teachers across the state who stopped work for 24 hours on Friday, May 28.

They were protesting "the NSW Government's threat to the independence of the Industrial Relations Commission".

"The Premier's attempt to influence the decision of the state's independent umpire is unacceptable and undemocratic," said NSW Independent Education Union secretary Mr Dick Shearman.

"The stop-work action will also protest the NSW Government's suggestion that a pay rise for teachers could mean a cut in funding to the education system.

"Teachers in Catholic schools are passionate about their work, but like their public sector colleagues, believe it is significantly undervalued."

NSW Catholic schools receive approximately 25 per cent of their funding from the State Government.
