Lunch for volunteers

The steering committee of Mary Mac's Place, Woy Woy, hosted a luncheon for its 30 volunteers as part of Volunteer Week Celebrations at St John the Baptist Parish Hall on Friday, May 14.

Project officer Ms Robyn Schacht said that last month the volunteers served over 380 meals to those in need.

"The volunteers prepare and serve hot food, freshly cooked lunches five days a week to homeless and disadvantaged men, women and children in the welcoming social environment of Mary Mac's kitchen," she said.

"The service continues the work commenced by a number of St John the Baptist parishioners at Mackillop Cottage over 10 years ago."

Mary Mac's Place is a joint venture of St John the Baptist Parish, Centacare and St Vincent De Paul.

Its steering committee includes representative from these bodies as well as Centelink, community and volunteer representatives, Member for Peats Ms Marie Andrews and Cr Chris Holstein.

Volunteering Australia has also used volunteer week to urge people to join the 4.4 million Australians who "participate, activate and create" as volunteers.

Its web site has more than 6500 volunteering positions advertised across the country
