Canteen adopts strategy
Brisbane Water Secondary College will be among NSW schools that will adopt a Healthy School Canteen Strategy being introduced this year.
This strategy was developed in response to the NSW Government Childhood Obesity Summit held in September 2002.
The strategy aims to provide foods in school canteens that are consistent with the Dietary Guidelines for Children and Adolescents.
School canteens have been identified as one of the major take-away food markets in New South Wales, with 2700 of the 3200 schools in the State providing a canteen service.
Canteens cater for close to one million students, and are therefore considered a good place to encourage healthy eating habits for children.
