Many petition for flashing lights

A petition for flashing lights for school zones outside two local schools has been signed by 700 people.

The petition is to be presented to Member for Peats Ms Marie Andrews, Minister for Roads Mr Carl Scully and Gosford councillors.

The petition, initiated by the local Save Our Suburbs group, also calls for flashing lights in the other school zones.

Save Our Suburbs representative Mr Mark Ellis said the State Government gathered more than $1.5 million a month from motorists caught by speed cameras outside 10 Central Coast schools, two of which were on the Peninsula.

"These funds could be used for flashing light installation," he said.

"The problem is not restricted to schools with speed cameras.

"Umina public has a 40km zone on busy Hobart Ave where there is only a crossing co-ordinator on the pedestrian crossing at intersection of Hobart Ave and Melbourne Rd.

"Many drivers ignorantly drive round the corner of Sydney Ave doing 60 km, only to come across children crossing the road.

"These petitions will bring to the attention of politicians the seriousness of this situation.

"There is immense concern in the community about the school zones and speed cameras, especially main road sites such as Woy Woy Public and Woy Woy South."

"Flashing lights in this situation would alert motorists to slow down and avoid many of the near misses that are currently occurring."

Any schools wishing to receive a copy of the petition may call 0413 933 244 or email a request to soscc@hotmail.com
