Ideas of a civic square
Some in the community in the past have wanted to create a civic square in front of Woy Woy Library where people can meet.
I think this would work out to be highly inappropriate.
Although people do meet there, it is much too small with too much traffic passing through to be a major meeting spot for the community at large.
Anderson Park on the waterfront seems to have become the unofficial civic square for the community.
This is ideal.
The park is big enough and, if warranted, traffic can be closed off.
Nearby Pelican Park has been a great idea and well patronised, and Rotary will reactivate their fountain soon.
A lot could be done to the park to make it even more amenable and "official".
Perhaps we could close off the area to vehicles and make it a pedestrian-only area. Just a thought, but I think one well worth discussing.
Discussions are now taking place as to whether the road should be one way or two.
I urge the community to write to Peninsula News or the Peninsula Chamber of Commerce and have a say.
C Jay's Restaurant has helped facilitate movement between the CBD and Anderson Park by opening up the walkway near their premises.
Anderson Park has space, is used, is getting known and businesses in the area are keen to see this movement to the park continue happening.
The Country Women's Association (CWA) hall adjacent to the Park could be transformed into a commemoration to the CWA's contribution; perhaps as an historical exhibition citing the importance to their role in creating community.
Of course, the CWA's members should be involved in the process.
The idea of a civic square where we can meet and escape the hurly-burly of the main CBD is one worth investigating.
