Member for Gosford wanted in NSW Youth Parliament
Applications have opened for the 2024 NSW Youth Parliament, and local young people are being encouraged to apply to be the youth Member for Gosford.
Young people aged between 15 and 18 in all 93 NSW state electorates have been invited to express interest.
The Youth Parliament is organised by The Y NSW organisation, formerly known as the YMCA.
"The Youth Parliament provides a unique platform for individuals to actively participate in the democratic process and advocate for issues that they are passionate about," said executive director Ms Prue Warrilow.
"We believe in the power of inspired young people and Youth Parliament offers the opportunity for our youth to learn about the parliamentary system, develop critical thinking and public speaking skills, and engage in constructive debates about issues that matter to them and their communities," she said.
"Participants will have the chance to draft, debate, and advocate for mock youth-focused legislation, gaining invaluable insights into the workings of government and policy development.
"Young parliamentarians also participate in a training camp in April and a sitting held in July in NSW Parliament next year.
"Participants may present their Youth Bills to Ministers and other community leaders for consideration," continued Ms Warrilow.
Member for Gosford Ms Liesl Tesch said: "Youth Parliament is a fantastic opportunity to broaden skills across leadership, parliamentary knowledge and public speaking.
"This program is for the future generation of leaders and anyone who wants to advocate for change should consider participating.
"I encourage anyone who is passionate about making change in the community to apply."
Further details are available online at ymcansw.org.au/community-services/youth/youth-parliament/.
Applications should be submitted before February 9.
School teachers and Members of Parliament can also nominate a young person.
