Celebration under trees in sweltering heat
More than 40 people attended a celebration under the trees in sweltering heat in Austin Butler reserve on Saturday morning, December 9.
"Despite the heat, the mood was one of happiness and jubilation, with children's painting, singing, poetry and speeches by community members who participated in the campaign to retain the trees and open space within the reserve," said Australian Conservation Foundation Central Coast convenor Mr Mark Ellis.
Among those attending was Member for Gosford Ms Liesl Tesch.
Mr Ellis told the crowd: "Today's temperatures highlight the importance of urban trees.
"Council should change its budget priorities.
"Instead of spending millions on an airport, they should increase the budget for tree planting, not only on the Peninsula but across the whole Coast to reduce the heat island impacts identified by the council in its greening strategy," he said.
