Worked in retirement

Peninsula resident Joyce McCabe, born November 22, 1916, died on June 20.

Friend Mrs Marj Cleere said: "Joyce had many strings to her bow.

"When she retired, she took on the strenuous role with a group of other retirees working out of Alice Ranson cottage, where the volunteers created emergency accommodation, a women's refuge, a housekeeping emergency service, shopping for incapacitated, and even cleaning.

"Her last big community effort was to work with Rose at the Senior Citizens.

"This much-travelled lady always thought of others and managed to return with lots of 'little somethings' for everybody.

"She could be well remembered for her somewhat abrasive manner whilst getting the job done but inspired others to work now and play later."
