Woodie Guthrie story at folk club

The Troubadour Folk Club will present "Hard Travellin' - The Woody Guthrie Story" with Peter Hicks and Us Not Them, at the Peninsula Theatre on Friday, July 25, at 8pm.

Folk club committee member Frank Russell said: "Woody Guthrie was the greatest folk singer of his generation and has directly influenced performers such as Jack Elliott, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, and Billy Bragg.

"Woody Guthrie sang songs of struggle and political action.

"Without Woody Guthrie the folk revival of the nineteen sixties would not have happened," he said.

Mr Russell said Peter Hicks was a singer-songwriter in the tradition of Woody Guthrie.

"His songs have their roots in the everyday lives and experiences of everyday people, and in the issues of greatest concern to us all.

"He sings about the environment, about the need for world peace and the causes of war.

"But ultimately, he delivers a message of hope.

"His vision is of a world where people can live and work together in harmony and co-operation, not conflict.

"Us Not Them are Jason and Chloe Roweth, who are regarded as among the finest interpreters of Australian traditional material and are renowned for their beautiful and sensitive arrangements.

"Us Not Them will also be performing songs from their new album As Good as New."

Also performing on the evening will be Bluesman Earlwood Greg, and Jan Couchman's Harp Ensamble.

Tickets are $15, $12.50 concession and $10 for members at the door.

They can be booked on 4341 4060, 0417 456 929, or email frussell@fastlink.com.au
