Local band enters internet competition

Fyna, a band comprised of three Year 12 students at Brisbane Water Secondary College, has entered an internet competition called "Best Mix" which is open to all ages.

Two of the band's songs can be heard and voted for on www.thebestmix.com.

Fyna recently advanced to the final of a contest called Youth Rock 2003 and finished in third place.

They won music-related legal advice, studio recording time, music equipment to the value of $500 for the band and additional music equipment, also valued to $500, for the school.

First place in Youth Rock 2003 was Balina band "Brittle FX" and second was the group "Agnes" from Sydney.

Band members Alex Bennison, Tim John, and Dave Jenkins have performed together at school events, fundraisers, and charity events, including the youth suicide concert, Remembrance.

The band entered the Kool Skools Recording and Multimedia Project and won many awards at the NSW Kool Skools music awards presentation.

The band picked up awards in Best Male Vocalist (Alex Bennison), Best Guitarist (Alex Bennison), Best Bass (Tim Johm), Best Drummer (Dave Jenkins), Best Alternative-Rock Song, Best Cover and Best Alternative-Rock Band.

Fyna was the first band to be presented with the award of the Wayne Coulton Memorial Shield which commemorates Wayne Coulton, a former student of Woy Woy High School, who fell victim to the disease known as lymphodemia.
