Bowls teams reach finals

Everglades men's bowling championships are progressing with pairs and triples reaching semis and quarter finals.

In the pairs, Glen and Ted Hewson have won through to the finals after a hard-fought semi against Brian Crawley and John Byrzinski.

The other semi final will feature Jon Gibbon and Laurie Powell playing Shane Slavin and Ian Street.

The Triples quarter finals have been played with one exception - Brian Crawley's team to play Bruce McDonald.

The other semi-finalists are teams led by Gordon Wilmott, Howard Franklin and Barry O'Connor.

The final of the minor singles was played between Kevin Smith and Eric Jackson, with Kevin finishing too strong and winning the first of many future championships.

The June long weekend saw a fiercely-contested competition on the Saturday with the team of Ray Fairleigh, Ralph Davis and Bruce McDonald winning from M Dickinson, N Leonard and B Selwood in the "winners of the winners" and the team of N Mellish, K Langwitz and H O'Neill winning the "winners of the runners-up".

The Monday pairs saw the combination of N Tiernan and R Mason finishing on top in front of C Arthur and D Gillett with R Reilly and G Pope finishing a close third.

Everglades RSL bowlers went through the pennant season undefeated and won the No 2 pennant.

The teams in the final were Sam Andrews, Ron Reilly, Bruce McDonald and Roger Ford with George Pope, John Partridge, Jack Ghiggino and Barry O'Connor.

The overall winning margin was seven shots which was enough to bring the flag home, the first one since 1988.
