Kerstin wins senior open tap dancing

Kerstin Kempken, 14, of Woy Woy, won every tap section she entered at the Central Coast Performing Arts Challenge, and secured first place in the senior open tap competition.

Her routines included waltz, speed, slow, improvisation, and song and dance.

Kerstin is now preparing for her Silver Star and Medallion tap exams.

Kerstin's mother, Sharon, said: "Kerstin just loves to dance.

"She hasn't had it easy. It's lucky she's so dedicated.

"I haven't had a car for three years. I'm trying to do all that I can on a sole parent income. But not being able to travel to most venues or commit to auditions and shows is a real handicap."

Kerstin has received a multitude of dance awards and performed at numerous venues and competitions.

Kerstin, who commenced dance training at the age of 5, studies tap, jazz, classical ballet, modern, contemporary, and cabaret at Lovett's Dance and Talent Academy.

In recent years Kerstin has received several tap scholarships, more than 100 awards for her individual routines, and 80 ribbons as a member of the Lovett Showteam. In the same period she performed in Peter and the Wolf at Sydney's Wonderland, the Gosford Olympic torch relay ceremony, and several talent quests.

Miss Pam Lovett, Kerstin's dance teacher, said: "Kerstin is a talented student with a lot of potential.

"She's a lovely girl with a good attitude. I enjoy working with her and she always gives 100%."
