Campbells adds new outlet
One of the longest-serving Peninsula-based family businesses, the Campbell family, has added a new hardware outlet in Woy Woy.
The family started its retail experience in the general store at Woy Woy Bay in 1967.
Their involvement with the hardware business commenced in 1973, when son Dick Campbell opened for business with a partner under the trading name of Etons in Charlton St, Woy Woy.
The partner was bought out in 1983 and the business became Campbells Hardware.
The site was taken over by McDonalds and Campbells Home Hardware moved to its present site on Blackwall Road in 1994.
Two years earlier it had joined the Home Timber and Hardware buying group.
Son Mark Campbell, who has lived on the Peninsula for 30 years, is now the managing director of the Campbells group of companies having taken over from his father who is semi-retired..
The new premises at 91 Rawson Road was previously owned by Bob Mackey who traded in the same business at that location for 25 years.
Bob Mackey has now retired and moved to Broken Hill.
Mark said the new premises was required by Campbells to expand its range of stock and to develop the manufacturing side of the business.
The area is used for bulk storage, receipt of large deliveries and also houses heavy machinery which is used for precise cutting.
The new outlet trades separately in similar items to that previously carried by Mackeys and is being managed by Billy Ide. He will be known by many Peninsula residents from his previous employment at Campbells Home Hardware.
