Students look at Woy Woy architecture
A group of second year architecture students accompanied by lecturers from the University of Sydney visited Woy Woy recently as part of their studies.
The students chose Woy Woy as their preferred option from a number of destinations to use as a hypothetical base for their project.
The students spent the whole day in Woy Woy making several drawings and taking the Woy Woy development control plan with them to include in their work.
The students were looking into the design of a complex for disadvantaged youth according to student Johanna Nolan.
"We're looking at disabled access, the neighbours of any proposal and taking into account Pelican Park," she said.
She said community consultation would be needed and any plan would have to fit in with the existing streetscape.
"We're looking at the block with the CWA Hall and CJs restaurant in it."
Fellow student, Connie Molina, said they were evaluating space and dimensions of the block to see how they could create "community space".
"We'll take into account the findings of such things as the Safer Towns and Cities report," she said.
The report had as one of its findings the need to create creative public space for youth thereby giving then an alternative to congregating at shopping centres and service stations.
Ms Nolan and Ms Molina said the principles of ecologically sustainable development also had to be taken into account in their proposals.
"Today we are looking into what we can and can't do with the site and what type of character of building would suit," Ms Molina said.
"Maybe we can knock down Huck Finns and the CWA Hall," Ms Nolan said.
