Help for unemployed
A free program of part-time courses is available at Ettalong for unemployed 15-24 year olds who did not complete year 12.
The Helping Early Leavers Program (HELP) was introduced in 1989 as a component of the youth initiative package.
It is funded by the State Government through the Youth Assistance Strategies Section of the Department of Education and Training.
HELP aims to provide early school leavers with opportunities to improve everyday literacy and numeracy, self esteem and social skills.
On April 12, students from within and outside the Peninsula graduated after completing Term One.
They had completed introductory courses in childcare, computers, creative arts and performing arts.
Graduates will now use their newfound knowledge and self esteem to look for work on their own and with the ongoing assistance of employment services organisation Workwise.
Workwise will also provide an ongoing resume update service for all participants.
Graduate of the introduction to computers course, Clare Dawes, said: "The course was a great deal of fun and very interesting at the same time.
"I am certain that it well help a great deal in finding work."
This year, the Ettalong Baptist Church made a financial donation to the HELP program as part of their 50th anniversary celebrations.
Enrolments are now being taken for term two courses, which are introduction to trades, computers, creative arts and performing arts.
