Creek work suspended

Further council clearing work on Kahibah Creek at Umina has been deferred pending the results of a site inspection.

Councillors, council officers and the Fisheries Department representatives are expected to attend.

So far some trees had been removed, some typha reeds cut and painted, and a section of the creek at Calypta Rd has been excavated.

Officers have recommended the council spends an additional $57,000 on typha reed control near Greenhaven Rd.

Officers had originally recommended spraying herbicide to rid the waterway of the reeds, but the council decided to use a more environmentally-friendly cutting and removing technique.

Council’s director of development and the environment, Mr John Murray, said a detailed estimate had not been prepared for the councillors' preferred method.

Following the council's decision, Mr Murray said detailed specifications were prepared.

"The lowest quotation represents a large increase in the cost of the work beyond the original estimate," he said
