Jubilee Cross ceremony planned

The Peninsula will host the Jubilee Cross during the week of May 20 to 27.

The Jubilee Cross is the symbol of the Christ of 2000 years and it will arrive on one of a flotilla of boats on May 20.

Some of the boats will travel from Kincumber representing the journey that was made many times by Blessed Mary Mackillop.

Travelling with the cross will be Bishop David Walker and other denominational leaders.

The boats will be met by a group of Aboriginal dancers who will challenge the arrival, the disunity amongst Christian groups and their history of discord.

This will lead to a ceremony of reconciliation.

Throughout the week there will be a series of special religious gatherings and pilgrimages at South Woy Woy and Umina as well as visits to churches, schools and hospitals.

This will culminate in an all-night vigil on the beach and an ecumenical dawn service as the sun rises on May 27.

The celebration is intended as a multi-denominational activity for all members of the Christian community.

These events are an experiment in responding to real needs in the local community and providing new ways of being more integrally Christian and responsive to the "cry of the poor".

Further details are available from the Parish Office of St John the Baptist on 4341 1073.
