School encourages teenage mothers

The Woy Woy Senior Campus of Brisbane Water Secondary College is encouraging teenage mothers to return to school with their babies.

"We want to provide an opportunity for teenage parents to complete their schooling, so we are adopting a program based on the highly successful Plumpton one to encourage young mothers to return to school," principal Mr David Beattie said.

The campus offered a range of subjects and was able to develop individual learning plans to allow for the needs of babies as well as meet mothers' requirements for study in Year 10, 11 and 12.

It was possible to do two or three subjects a year leading to the HSC, he said.

Mr Beattie said that by completing formal education, students would have a better range of employment opportunities.

"The School Certificate and especially the Higher School Certificate are the ticket to most jobs these days," he said.

The Gosford Family Support Service would also provide assistance with Centrelink payments, health care and transport.

Woy Woy Senior Campus will provide information to prospective students between now and December 19 and again on January 28.

With inquiries, phone the school on 4341 1600.
