Ground water pumps for three ovals

Gosford Council has completed installation of pump and irrigation systems on three of its ovals on the Peninsula.

Spear point pumps have been installed at Woy Woy Oval, Umina Oval, and Rogers Park.

The pumps drilled five to six metres below the surface to tap into the ground water that underlies the Peninsula.

This water replaces the use of drinking quality water supply.

It will help to conserve precious water and extend the life of the available water in Mangrove Dam.

Mayor Cr Robert Bell said: "By using ground water, we will save the equivalent of 400 Olympic Pools of drinking quality water each year when all the spear points are installed.

"Another bonus is this ground water contains trace elements that will help feed the grass."

"Scientific reports indicate that there is a sustainable supply of two megalitres of water per day.

"The cost of watering Woy Woy Oval using the Mangrove Creek Dam is $11,000, then there is the cost of the pumping system of $6000, so there is a double saving.

Each park provides a saving of up to 1500 kilolitres of water each week during irrigation periods, more than justifying the investment of up to $8000 for each park, he said.

The pumps at Woy Woy Oval were jointly funded by Council, Woy Woy Leagues Club and Woy Woy Union Club.

Tests conducted on the water quality at each of the three ovals where these systems have been installed, indicate a high quality supply.

The supply will be regularly monitored to ensure that it continues to be sustainable.

Each of the ovals will save thousands of kilolitres each week of the community's water supply, ensuring that the ovals are maintained in good condition for the community.
