School for Seniors has birthday

The School for Seniors at Woy Woy is commemorating its 14th year of operation from the Peninsula Community Centre.

The aim of the school is to give adults aged over 50 a chance to learn or share their skills in a variety of programs.

Mr Reid of the Woy Woy Community Recreation Centre said that the Central Coast School for Seniors is a program of interesting activities offering fun, friendship, information, mental stimulation and physical exercise.

Gosford TAFE had supplied teachers to assist in running the courses.

"I have been a member for 12 years and found out about the school when I was shopping," said student Pat Senior.

"I've made a lot of friends, met lots of interesting people and learnt so much from the teachers," she said.

A variety of courses have been offered at the school including art, craft, fabric painting, embroidery, pottery, tapestry, canasta, woodwork and house maintenance.

Courses in current affairs, computers, creative writing, car maintenance, aqua aerobics, bridge, Tai Chi, and meditation are also offered.

They have also offered courses in history such as local history, history of live theatre and Australian history.

Courses about flora and fauna, local environment, drama, house plumbing, constitution Australia, German, astrology, physiology, aboriginal affairs, astronomy, first aid, and drug/alcohol awareness are also offered.

The school also provides the seniors with the opportunity of going on excursions with bush walks and coach trips.

Rent is paid for the use of the room and each person pays $2 per day.

According to members, not only are the friendships valuable but the learning and leisure times bind the group together for mutual support.
