Full fare proposed for retirees

Do your readers realise that the proposed changes to rail fares may mean that self-funded retirees, often on low fixed incomes may now have to pay full fare on public transport?

The current $2.20 seniors ticket Woy Woy to Sydney will cost at least $16 plus extras for connecting bus and ferry services.

Full pensioners will continue to access discount fares.

Self-funded retirees who have been independent and careful throughout their working lives may now be penalised on their retirement for their being frugal.

Older folk contribute to society often travelling to care for grandchildren.

Others travel to visit medical specialists or just to "get out of home", essential for good mental health.

If transport fares become too expensive, older folk will use their cars instead, adding to the problems on the roads.

Many of your readers have retired to the Central Coast on the basis that they could have economical access to city services and family contacts.
