Medals for Woy Woy judo

Woy Woy Judo Club won four gold, six silver and one bronze medal when it competed in the Summer Championships at the Michael Wendon Stadium in Liverpool on Sunday, February 11.

The tournament was the first State Selections Tournament with Woy Woy fielding a team of 11 players, ranging from under-10s to the Young Men and Women's Division.

First-time competitor Megan Gorst and second-time competitor Gordon Reid (under-10 Novices) both took out their weight divisions to win gold.

Naomi Cole, who was the overall winner in the under-10s last year, has now gone into the under-13s, a larger division of 10 to 12-year-olds, winning a silver medal.

Michael Ahearn also took a silver medal in the under-13 and under-50kg division.

The five entrants in the under-16 division: Brendon Cole (under-45kg) Steven Arnold a State Representative (under-55kg), Daniel Simmons also a State Representative (under-60kg), and Sean Cole (under-66kg) all attained silver medals.

Jessica Malone (under-70kg), who was last year's Australian National Titleholder, proved unbeatable taking gold with a full scoreboard of points.

Danny Simmons, who received the Australian Sports Medal last year, said the competitors were all good sports, who were well-behaved showing their pride for the club.

"To obtain a medal in all our weight divisions is excellent. This puts them in contention for state team selections."

Woy Woy Judo club hopes to take a team of 10 to Okayama, Japan, in July this year to return the visit paid to Woy Woy by Okayama Renmei Judo Club in 1999.

The club is a non-profit organisation, located at the Peninsula Community Centre.

It is currently seeking help in getting the team to Japan.

For more information contact the Secretary, Lindy Simmons, on 4342 4121.

Training nights are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5.30pm.
