Umina CWA hosts a Spanish day
The Umina branch of the Country Womens' Association (CWA) held a Spanish day for its members at their hall on Wednesday, June 16, with more than 60 members and guests and a number of school children present.
As part of its activities, the CWA have a cultural officer that each year selects a country to be studied and featured throughout the movement.
This year Spain was the chosen country and the Umina Branch went all out to be part of the event.
The CWA hall was decorated with in a Spanish theme and a highly entertaining show, including dancers and a bullfight was put on by the members.
A Spanish meal was served and classical guitarist, David Martucci, was invited as a special guest to add live music and personal anecdotes to the occasion.
Umina Public School participated by asking sixth grade students to undertake a project on Spain and selected the best 13 for display.
The winning projects were submitted by Corinne Hyde (1st prize), Yolanda Veltmeyer (2nd prize) and Billy Burgess (3rd prize).
Other finalists were Alex Tsambos, Alana Reeves, Reshae Smith, Alison Mair, Scott Meulman, Nicole Ely, Kate Kennedy, Mark Bednarezyk, Kimberley Pearson, and Annette Hurst.
The Umina branch of the CWA has serviced the community for 48 years, according to president Beryl Finch.
It has more than 70 active members and raises funds for a large number of charities, as well as helping locals in need.
Members come from all walks of life and number 44,000 across Australia, of which 14,000 are in NSW.
"We have an enjoyable time meeting regularly and helping the community," said secretary Claire Wren.
