Peninsula Physical Culture clubs resume

The South Woy Woy Kariong Physical Culture Club has resumed classes on Thursday evenings at Umina Public School while the Woy Woy club holds classes on Wednesdays at the Woy Woy Community Centre..

Physical culture is an enjoyable way for girls to learn poise and deportment and classes are available for ages 3 to adult.

In 1999, the South Woy Woy Kariong club competed in two inter-club competitions against other local clubs and some Sydney based clubs.

One of the competitions was at Allambie Heights in July, where the club won 7 of the 9 possible junior events held and won a total of 17 places.

In the other competition held at Berowra in August, the club won 5 of the 9 junior events.

The club also competed against 13 other local clubs in the Champion Girl of Gosford Tournament, where the club had 18 finalists, 14 of whom went on to be Grand Finalists.

Rebecca Allen was the 7-year old zone winner and her sister Jessica Allen was third in the 8-year-old zone championships.

Both went on to the National Finals in November and reached the semi finals, according to their proud long-term instructor, Mrs Bev Thompson.

The Woy Woy club is the Peninsula's oldest club having been established over 26 years.

As an "A" grade club, Woy Woy have also received excellent results for individual and team events.

They had several girls reach junior and senior national finals with one of the seniors, Abby Weeks being ranked fourth best in Australia.

The junior, senior and ladies teams also placed highly.

The 14 to 15 year age team finished 3rd in the state, the highest-placed team from the Central Coast.
