Brigade captain steps down after 35 years
Patonga Volunteer Rural Bush Fire Brigade captain Mr Mark "Zac" Zwan has stood down after more than 35 years of service.
Following the brigade's annual meeting on Tuesday, July 23, he "handed over the three stripes" on his epaulettes to new captain Mr Matt Hauser.
Mr Zwan joined the Rural Fire Service almost 50 years ago, in 1975.
He became captain of the brigade in 1989.
During his three decades as captain, he has aimed to create a highly-engaged and community-focused team, to instill a strong sense of shared responsibility for preparedness amongst the local community members.
Mr Zwan will continue as an active member of the brigade and will now support Mr Hauser as senior deputy captain.
The annual meeting also saw treasurer Ms Nicola Bergen stand down from the position she has held for nine years.
She will also remain a brigade member.
Ms Bergen joined the brigade 11 years ago.
In that time, she has held positions of secretary, welfare officer, call-out officer, community engagement officer, RFSA rep, caterer, along with making grant applications and being an active firefighter.
